Three ordinary men ... one extraordinary challenge!

Barney Franklin, Steve Napier and Giles Greenslade are Polar Challenge team "Best Served Chilled"

Can you imagine walking 350 miles?

That would be like walking from London to Scotland!

Well, how about walking 350 miles and dragging 120 lbs (that's around the same weight as a Britney Spears) behind you all the way?

That would make it a little tougher right?

Well how would you feel about dragging Britney Spears behind you for 350 miles, in temperatures as low as -50 degrees, across ice and snow ... and with the constant threat of hungry polar bears trying to eat you!

Sound like a nightmare?

Well, this is The Polar Challenge!

The Polar Challenge is a 350 mile foot race to the magnetic North Pole and is considered to be one of the most unique and dangerous races in the world.

In April 2008 we will each say goodbye to our families and friends and leave the comforts of home behind us for three weeks as we risk our lives racing unassisted to the North Pole.

Incredibly, before the race even begins we will face a freezing 6-day walk to the start line!

There will be no cars, ski-mobiles or huskies to help us get us to the pole. The first rule of The Polar Challenge is that we must carry everything we need for the race on specially designed sleds (or pulks) that we pull along behind us.

The actual race will last for approximately 10 -12 days and during this entire time we will be living and sleeping on the ice, with only the most basic of rations and camping equipment.

As well as the obvious dangers of frostbite, falling through thin ice and hypothermia, there will also be the ever present threat of one of the worlds biggest and most dangerous predators - the polar bears!

Did you know that a polar bear can smell food from over 20 miles away?

That's why we have to carry a shotgun the whole way too!

You are probably wondering why we have all decided to take on a crazy challenge like this.

Well, as well as being a tremendous personal challenge for each of us, it is also a fantastic opportunity to raise a lot of money for three charities very close to our hearts:

  • Macmillan Cancer Support
  • The Afghanistan Trust
  • The St Roses School For Special Needs Children

Our target is to raise over £30,000 for these charities and we need your help!

Please take a few minutes to sponsor us before the phone goes, or a new email distracts you. The more money we raise, the more worthwhile this challenge becomes - so please click here now!
